Social Impact Hackathons: A Blueprint for Change
Social Impact Hackathons have emerged as a powerful tool to address and solve some of the most pressing challenges facing our societies today. By bringing together diverse groups of people, from technologists and academics to community leaders and policymakers, these hackathons harness collective creativity to develop innovative solutions that promote social good.
The HarvestHate Hackathon, our inaugural event, set a precedent by demonstrating how focused collaboration could effectively tackle issues such as online hate, misinformation, and community disenfranchisement.
The inaugural event in this series, the HarvestHate Hackathon, set a high standard for success and engagement. Held virtually from April 26-28, it was specifically designed to combat online harms, hate speech, and disinformation. The event was sponsored by the Government of Canada and supported by a coalition of committed partners, including Canadian Heritage, the Province of British Columbia, the Strong Cities Network, South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, the University of British Columbia (UBC), and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). These partners played crucial roles in bringing this initiative to life, contributing their resources, expertise, and platforms to ensure the hackathon's success.
