Vancouver City’s Proclamation Reading for January 29th’s Day of Remembrance and Action on Islamophobia

Jan 24, 2024

Mayor Ken Sim’s Proclamation Reading took place at the Council Chamber of Vancouver City Hall in recognition of the January 29th Day of Remembrance and Action on Islamophobia. The Foundation for a Path Forward was in attendance at the event, alongside Vancouver City councillors and members of the Canadian Muslim community, marking a collective acknowledgment and effort against Islamophobia.

The proclamation was dedicated to the mass shooting at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City that occurred on January 29th 2017. It was a harrowing incident where six men were killed and nineteen injured during evening prayers. This act of violence, fueled by Islamophobia and extremist ideologies, catalyzed nationwide mourning, solidarity with the Muslim community, and discussions on combating hate-based violence, underscoring the need for inclusivity and understanding in society. The annual day of remembrance serves not only as a memorial for the victims but also as a call to action against Islamophobia, promoting unity, understanding, and resilience against hate and discrimination.
