The Other People Parent Engagement Session at South Okanagan Immigrant & Community Services

The South Okanagan Immigrant & Community Services (SOICS) hosted a special parent engagement session featuring The Other People, a pioneering program dedicated to addressing online hate and fostering inclusivity. This hybrid event, held in collaboration with School District 67, brought together parents eager to learn practical strategies for educating themselves and their children about the complexities of online hate.

The session began with a warm welcome from SOICS, emphasizing the importance of equipping parents with the tools to navigate the challenges of the digital world. A representative from The Other People delivered a compelling 30-minute presentation, offering actionable insights into combating online hate and fostering empathy within families. The presentation highlighted how parents can model critical thinking, challenge biases, and create open dialogues with their children about the harmful impacts of racism and discrimination.

The Other People initiative, renowned for its impactful work in schools across British Columbia, emerged from a collaboration among community leaders and anti-racism organizations. Its mission is to empower Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour (IBPOC), as well as Faith Leaders, to address systemic and individual racism throughout the province. Since its inception, The Other People has reached over 5,000 students, parents, and educators through more than 50 events, offering evidence-based anti-racism education.

The session at SOICS reflected the program's growing reach and influence. Parents not only gained a deeper understanding of online hate but also practical tools to foster inclusivity and respect within their homes. The presentation emphasized the importance of personal connections in breaking down biases, a core principle of The Other People initiative.
