Mar 02, 2024

From March 2 to 3, Penny Appeal Canada, Foundation for a Path Forward, and Project FALAH, came together with Eclectic House to hold Weekend Intensive Workshops, combining the science of therapy and the spirituality of Islam. South Vancouver Neighbourhood House Southside Hub became a vibrant space for profound discussions and learning over the weekend. Spearheaded by Khaleel Kassim, International Islamic Therapist, Mental Health Consultant, and Director of Eclectic House, the workshop offered an immersive experience focused on the rich tapestry of Islamic teachings and contemporary societal issues, drawing participants keen on deepening their understanding of Islam's perspective on love, self-awareness, and parenting in today's world.

This two-day event was the result of a collaborative effort among several key community organizations committed to fostering dialogue and understanding. The Foundation for a Path Forward, Project FALAH, and Penny Appeal came together to support this initiative, each bringing unique insights and resources that significantly enriched the workshop's offerings.

The first day of the workshop, themed "Islam & the Philosophy of Love: God, Self & Others," provided attendees with a holistic overview of love from an Islamic philosophical standpoint. Participants engaged in discussions that explored the multifaceted nature of love in relation to divine love, self-love, and the love for others, guided by Khaleel Kassim’s expert insights and therapeutic background.

The following day focused on "Parenting & the Contemporary World: Through the Islamic Tradition," addressing the complex challenges modern parents face. The session covered strategies for nurturing and guidance grounded in Islamic traditions, helping parents connect age-old wisdom with modern-day dilemmas, from digital parenting to cultural identity issues.

Throughout the weekend, the workshop not only offered educational content but also fostered a sense of community among attendees. The collaborative nature of the workshop, underscored by the participation of the Foundation for a Path Forward, Project FALAH, and Penny Appeal, highlighted the collective effort in addressing and discussing significant social and personal issues through the lens of faith.

Refreshments and breaks provided opportunities for participants to mingle and discuss personal experiences and insights, further cementing the sense of community and shared learning. The intimate setting at the SVNH Southside Hub facilitated deeper connections, making the discussions more meaningful and personalized.

As the workshop concluded, feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the thoughtful organization and the quality of the content provided. The success of the event demonstrated the critical role of collaborative community efforts in enhancing understanding and dialogue around important issues.

Looking forward, the organizers hope to continue offering such enriching experiences that not only educate but also inspire community members to engage deeply with their faith and contemporary issues. Tickets for the event were managed through Eventbrite, ensuring a streamlined and accessible registration process for all attendees, who were required to be 18 years or older.

This successful workshop marks a significant step forward in the journey toward fostering a more inclusive and understanding community, driven by the collaborative spirit of its organizers and the enthusiastic participation of its attendees.
